Methuselah is a life-sized steel and stained glass replica of the oldest living tree in the world, a 4,848 year old bristlecone pine located in Eastern California. Led by visionary artists Misha Naiman and Gray Davidson, this sculpture was constructed by Majorelle Arts.
Tonglen by Ryan Mathern is a placid face of segmented, polished metal, eyes calm and lips pursed, supported by a neck armature containing two volumes, a diamond and a heart. Behind the mouth, inside the curve of the face is a diamond shaped combustion chamber and below it, just off the ground, a heart shaped bellows. A rod protrudes behind the head and joins to a levered handle, anchored to the ground so that a person acting on the handle will cause the bellows to expand and contract, forcing air through the combustion chamber and out of the mouth. Hot sparks from the burning wood will issue out on the exhale and the stoked combustion chamber will glow with heat, shining through the seams and incised writing on the face.
One of the amazing mutant vehicles at Burning Man.
Múcaro is a 30-foot tall representation of Múcaro, a wise and woody owl. Participants enter and exit through an opening under one of the wings. Inside the body is a cozy space with high ceilings and a single spiral staircase that journeys through childhood memories.
Macchina Naturale (Natural Machine) by David Boyer is a large kinetic wind sculpture reminiscent of a whimsical machine from a bygone era. Industrial elements blend with an organic tree-like form to create an amalgamation of the man-made and natural worlds. With their canopy of motion, light, and shadow, large horizontal paddle wheels create a contemplative Zen-like space. As our ecosystems are increasingly under assault, may this environmentally interactive sculpture be a reminder of our need to work with, rather than against, nature.
Phoenicopterus Rex is a gigantic replica of a pink plastic lawn flamingo. At 40 feet tall and 20 feet long, she will be the largest flamingo sculpture in the world, and probably the most absurd lawn ornament ever constructed.
Aqueous in an interactive landscape of meandering pathways of light. During the day Aqueous shifts in color and reflection, mirroring the sky within a walkable dichroic surface. At night, Aqueous flows and glows in full illuminated interactivity, engaging large groups in collaborative play.
The Phoenix Rising by the artistic collective Friends of a Feather is a steel sculpture of a Phoenix concealed within a wooden sculpture of a bird. The wooden sculpture will burn, revealing the metal Phoenix within.
Step Forward is a young girl who dreams of a better world in which everybody loves each other. One day she wakes up in an unknown place where she doesn’t really know if she is awake or in a wonderful dream. She watches in amusement all that takes place around her at the time she gets involved in Burning Man’s experience.
The Tree of Tènèrè is 32 feet tall with over 170,000 interactive LED's that synchronize to the heartbeats, dance movements and rhythms of the festival.
